Meghan Trainor opens her song "All About that Bass" with the lyrics "Yeah it's pretty clear, I ain't no size two, but I can shake it, shake it like I'm supposed to do."
I admit, this song is super cute and awfully catchy. The music video is adorable and the message behind it can be inspiring for girls who see themselves as "no stick-figure, silicone Barbie doll", which in reality of our insecure generation, is all of us.
As an average sized American girl living in Orange County, I have come accustomed to size 2 women with bleach blonde, mermaid hair and found this song to be relatable.
However, after picking apart the lyrics and watching the music video, I could not help but think about how truly one sided this song really is.
I think the ultimate vision behind the song was to make all girls feel beautiful, no matter their sizes. Go However, I think that promoting the empowerment of larger women by mockingly comparing them to "skinny b******" who "think they're fat" is the wrong way of addressing the issue.
The video stars girls who are much larger than the ones we have come accustomed to in music videos and magazines today. The girls in the video are above average and are "bringing booty back."
The idea is great and all, but the song also infers that woman with a "little more booty" are more attractive to men than those without, basically saying that skinny girls are less worthy or desirable for a man, which is not quite true. And not something we should be telling the world.
Popular culture needs to stop promoting confidence with insecurity: big or small, we're all beautiful!
Why must women put down other women to make themselves feel good? I will never understand.
For my friends who are size 2, I think you are beautiful!
And for those who are size 12, you are just as beautiful!
And I think that is what this music video should actually be about.
All in all, I think that we as women should empower each other. In this song, I absolutely adore the fact that she is proud of who she is. I think that is amazing and I wish we could all sing songs about that!
Stay Beautiful,
Megs.
